Deacon James V. Arena was assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Church in March 2019 by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair. He was ordained a deacon on June 12, 2004 in the Cathedral of St. Joseph (Hartford) by Archbishop Henry J. Mansell. Prior to coming to St. Francis, Deacon Jim was assigned to the linked parishes of St. John the Evangelist and St. Andrew (New Britain) in June 2004; and, St. Aloysius Parish (Plantsville) in June 2008.
Deacon Jim is also a tenured full professor at Central Connecticut State University where he has taught various chemistry courses and has conducted scientific research since January 1989. In May 1981, he received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in biochemistry from Manhattan College in Riverdale (Bronx), New York; and in August 1986, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in chemistry from the University of Connecticut. Deacon Jim/Dr. Arena is an analytical chemist with expertise in electroanalytical and chromatographic methods. His research has included the use of voltammetric methods to study the kinetics and mechanisms of electrochemical processes; as well as, applications of high-temperature liquid chromatographic methods in pharmaceutical analysis.
Deacon Jim and Elizabeth, his wife of more than 34 years, reside in New Britain and have been parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Church for more than 27 years. They have two children, Jason and Kristin. You can reach Deacon Jim at dcn.arena@AOHCT.org
